It is a high-end bike for people who love biking but don’t take themselves too seriously. I’m so happy that companies like Santa Cruz make great electric bikes. When you’re riding a bike made by people who like bikes, it’s a reminder that biking is pure joy, and not just a chilly, carless slog from one destination to the next. With that said, I love this bike with all my heart, but I have to admit that you could probably get nearly the same functionality with the Specialized Turbo Vado SL (9/10, WIRED Recommends) for several grand less. Since the Specialized has been out for longer, you might find one used for even cheaper.

Metro Update

This morning Metro Council voted to create a BPAC by a unanimous vote on third reading. It didn’t involve the theatrics of the previous meeting but there was still a little drama which was totally unnecessary. Once again, it was created by the greenways group. Assuming the current Mayor signs the bill it will be law for the next Mayor to appoint members and implement.  I think that the role of greenways in the transportation system needs a total rethink. I hope  the next Mayor and council will agree but I’ve got some ideas of my own.   Carey

Metro Council voted unanimously to create a BPAC

Last night, Metro Councilvoted unanimously to create a Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Commission. The bill must pass on third reading at the next council meeting and be signed by the Mayor.  Several unfriendly amendments were offered but after some parliamentary maneuvers were defeated by a  resounding 28-7 vote. That speaks volumes about this effort.  The sponsor, Freddie O’Connell, did an outstanding job presenting the bill and making the argument for reestablishing a BPAC.

Sean Parker, Bob Mendes, Emily Benedict and Colby Sledge were eloquent while speaking against the amendment and for the bill. Sean really led the charge against the hostile amendments. Angie Henderson and Zach Young were a great help in the effort. Other co-sponsors were Tonya Hancock, Ginny Welsch, Erin Evans, Burkley Allen and Delisha Porterfield. Thank them all if you get the chance.

A shout out to Wesley Smith and Meredith Montgomery of Walk Bike Nashville for all their help. A special thanks to David Kleinfelter, a founder and former President of WBN who kept me from doing too many stupid things. Peter Robison and Katherine McDonnell of the Vision Zero Committee were also very supportive.

Thanks to Lindsey Ganson who fought the good fight when the greenways mafia tried to remove e-bikes from greenways. That’s when I started thinking about doing this.

For the last 4500 miles, I have been checking my VADO SL chain. I have not needed to replace it. I have used the 0.5% recommen- dation setting from Park Tool.

A worn bicycle chain can cause poor shifting and in time can even cause excessive wear to the derailleur and rear cogs, causing a much more expensive problem. That's why bike component manufacturers recommend chain replacement at regular wear intervals. 

The Park Tool CC-3.2 is a go/no-go gauge designed to accurately indicate when a chain reaches 0.5% and 0.75% wear (or "stretch"), the points at which most chain manufacturers suggest replacement. The CC-3.2 is long, accurate, and features permanent measurement markings. 

The CC-3.2 works on most derailleur chains* from 5 to 12-speed. 

- 5-to-10-speed chains: replace chain at or just before 0.75%

- 11-to-12-speed chains*: replace at or just before 0.5%

Check with manufacturer for specific replacement instructions

*Use the CC-4 for SRAM® Flattop™ and SRAM® T-Type 12-speed chains.

Specialized RECALLED Some eBike Chargers

According to BARD (6/27/23), Specialized has acknowledged these problems for some of its ebike chargers and has issued a recall.

Specialized has had a few problems with its ebike charger, including:

• Charging problems: Some users have reported that their ebike chargers do not charge the battery properly, or that they take a long time to charge the battery.

• Faulty chargers: Some users have received faulty chargers that do not work at all.

• Y cable problems: The Y cable that is used to connect the charger to the battery and the range extender has also been known to cause problems.
